COUNTERTERRORISM police are investigating the Sydney shooting of a supporter of the Syrian leader, Bashar al-Assad, who was shot outside his home following a political argument on Facebook.
The flare-up of local violence stemming from the situation in Syria comes as Australia is in talks over a new international coalition to back opponents of the regime in Syria - even without a United Nations mandate.
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, yesterday added her voice to Western condemnation of the decision by Russia and China to veto a Security Council resolution on the crackdown in Syria.

''We certainly think that was the wrong decision, the wrong path and an abdication of responsibility in the face of the violence that we are seeing in Syria,'' she said.
Her comments came after Ali Ibrahim, also known as Wissam Al Ali, was shot in both legs outside his Punchbowl home. Mr Ibrahim's father, Jamal, said the shooting took place just after midnight on Monday morning after Mr Ibrahim, 29, had argued with someone on Facebook over a picture he had uploaded of the Syrian leader.
His wife had answered a knock at the door and was confronted by a man asking for her husband.
Mr Ibrahim and his family are Alawi, the same minority Muslim sect Dr Assad comes from, and they are strong supporters of the Syrian leader.
The shooting follows an attack on the Syrian embassy in Canberra at the weekend when as many as 30 men forced their way into building while three staff members hid in the basement.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Affairs Minister, Kevin Rudd, last night confirmed the government would consider providing extra humanitarian aid to people in Syria.
Mr Rudd was a leading proponent of Western military intervention in Libya last year.
